BEYOND THE GAME WITH CHRIS MANN

Chris Mann is the captain of the # 10 ranked Marvin Ridge High School soccer team.  His play in goal has allowed the second year school to sprint out to an 8-0-1 record.  Chris has recorded six shutouts and only allowed three goals on the season!  Chris is also a very good lacrosse player for The Mavericks.

How long have you played soccer for?   

“I've been playing soccer for thirteen years.  I started out with recreation league soccer when I was five.  I played for Weddington Middle and Weddington High, and now this is my second year playing for the Mavericks at Marvin Ridge.”

What is your favorite part of the game?  

“As a goalkeeper, my favorite part of the game is making several big saves in one play.”

How will the Mavericks do this year?   

“Last year we made it to the third round of the state play-offs.  This year Coach Fumo has taken us to an even higher level of play.  If we can avoid injury, we have a good chance of staying first in our conference and finishing high in the state rankings.”

Do you play Club Soccer? 

 “I play club soccer in the Mecklenburg Union Futbol Club for Gary Hamil, head coach, Wingate University's Men's Soccer”

What is the toughest part about playing your position? 

 “The toughest part about being a goalkeeper is dealing with crosses and breakaways.”

What is your favorite class at Marvin Ridge?

“This semester my favorite class is AP Physics.  Basically, Science and Math classes are my favorites.”

Where would you like to attend college? 

 “I plan to go to an engineering college.  I'm looking primarily at NC State, Virginia Tech and Clemson.”  

Best soccer player in the area is?  

“The best goal scorer in the area is Matt Risher.  He has a dangerous shot.  As far as defense, Jordan Day is hard to beat.  It's almost impossible to get around him.”
