JOHNNY O’BOYLE IS ON A MISSION THIS SEASON FOR CHARLOTTE CATHOLIC

All-purpose Charlotte Catholic football player Johnny O’Boyle is on a mission this season.  There is something very special that he is after.  For the last two seasons, Johnny has been a member of the Cougars varsity football team that finished as runner-ups in the state championship game.  He has watched from a distance as other teams raised the state championship plaque at midfield.  This year, Johnny wants to be the one holding the Championship plaque and celebrating with his teammates as another team watches.

So far this season, Johnny is doing his part to help the Cougars Football Team position themselves for a run at the title.  His team should be favored to win the remainder of their regular season games as well as the first few rounds of the state playoffs.  Many of these games will take place at Keefer Stadium, the home of the Cougars and the best fans in the city.

Johnny recognizes the power of the fan base at Charlotte Catholic.

“I can't imagine playing anywhere else. Playing for CCHS is one of the best things that has ever happened to me. The coaching staff is great, and the 12th man is ridicules. Our fans are the best in Charlotte. Stepping out onto Jim Oddo Field on Friday nights with the cowbells ringing and the fans going nuts has to be one of the best feelings in the world. I wouldn't have it any other way.”

So far this season, Johnny is rewarding these fans with great performances. Last week was a typical night for Johnny.  It was raining sideways in a big game versus Olympic, yet he had one touchdown reception for 52 yards and ran the ball twice for 63 yards and another touchdown.

Amazingly Johnny didn’t start the season on offense.  Only after a loss to South Meck, did he add offense to his resume.  One can’t blame Coach Oddo for Johnny not playing offense, not after a season on defense where he was awarded with All-Conference and All South Honors from The South Charlotte Sports Report.  Johnny was one of the hardest hitting free safeties in the area.

Now his list of positions is nearly as long as the Catholic playbook; free safety, tailback, wide receiver, kickoff returner and punt returner.  Despite not playing in the first game on offense, Johnny is tied for second on the team with touchdowns, third on the team in receiving yards and fourth on the team in rushing yards after six games.

Over on defense, Johnny is second on the team in total tackles and has one interception.  Not a bad set of stats for a 6’1” 177pound kid that runs a 4.65 forty!

His hard play has earned him the recognition of college coaches and he is holding an offer to play football at Cornell in his hand.  Many other smaller schools have spoken to Johnny as well, but he is holding out hope for a Division 1 offer.

Johnny doesn’t stop with baseball; he also plays baseball and basketball for Charlotte Catholic. He has also found success as a teenager in the swimming pool and has competed in the All-Star Swim Meet for Sardis Swim Team.

His easy-going nature comes out off the football field where he is known for having a big heart.  Last year when a Charlotte Catholic student was diagnosed with Cancer and lost his hair during Chemo treatments, Johnny went out and had a buzz cut to show he wouldn’t be alone.  Many of this teammates and classmates followed.

The same dedication to football and life shows up in the classroom as he is enrolled in mostly honors classes.  His school work should be a key contributor to earning more college football opportunities.

Johnny O’Boyle is one of the most well-rounded kids in the community.  The South Charlotte Sports Report salutes Johnny for his passion in sports and life and we wish him and the Cougars the best of luck in their pursuit of a state championship this season.  Hopefully Johnny will have a chance to raise the trophy high at midfield for all the Cougar fans to enjoy!
